School of Mechanical Engineering

The School of Mechanical Engineering has two national key disciplines, namely, mechanical engineering and power machinery and engineering, and a Beijing municipal key discipline called opto-mechatronics micro-nano manufacturing science and technology. It also has two primary disciplinary programs in mechanical engineering and power engineering and engineering thermophysics, three postdoctoral mobile stations, two primary discipline doctoral authorization points, two secondary emerging and interdisciplinary doctoral authorization points, one engineering doctoral authorization field, three engineering master's authorization fields, and six undergraduate majors.

It has a number of renowned faculty members, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The school also recruits high-level talents and has a big number of individuals selected for national-level talent programs.

The school is a leading institution in the field. It has established six national-level and seven provincial-level key research laboratories, covering a total area of 46,000 square meters. The laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, with a total asset value of nearly 880 million yuan. The school has a strong focus on research and has secured significant funding. In 2021 alone, its research funding exceeded 550 million yuan, with an average annual research funding per faculty member reaching 2.2 million yuan. The school has made important breakthroughs in various areas, including ground mobile equipment transmission technology, land mobile equipment power and propulsion technology, and in the application of new energy vehicles. Its achievements have been recognized internationally and have contributed to the optimization and upgrading of the automotive industry in Beijing. Furthermore, it has achieved significant progress in electronic-level observation and control in manufacturing, leading to a series of important applications and attracting widespread attention.

In the past five years, the school had secured a total of 1,111 national or defense invention patents, including international patents. It has published over 2,000 papers in academic journals and conferences, with more than 1,600 SCI-indexed papers and over 700 EI-indexed papers. Additionally, it has been recognized with eight national-level science and technology awards, as well as over 50 provincial and ministerial level awards. This includes first prize in the National Technology Invention Awards and second prize in the National Natural Science Awards.

The school has two national-level experimental teaching demonstration centers, one national-level basic course teaching base, and one national-level joint graduate training demonstration base. It offers five national-level characteristic undergraduate majors: vehicle engineering, armored vehicle engineering, energy and power engineering, mechanical engineering, and industrial engineering. Four of these majors have been selected for the Ministry of Education's Excellent Engineer Education Program. Two majors are key majors of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and first-class majors in Beijing. The school has also been approved by the Ministry of Education for the new engineering discipline of intelligent manufacturing engineering. Additionally, the mechanical engineering and vehicle engineering majors have achieved international substantial equivalence through the Chinese engineering education professional accreditation.

The school encourages student involvement in technological innovation and entrepreneurship, and has yielded impressive results. Over the past five years, undergraduate students had achieved success in 192 international and national-level science and technology competitions, along with 327 awards at the provincial and ministerial levels. Notably, they have been crowned national champions in the "Internet+" College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition for four consecutive years. Additionally, in the past five years, they earned nine gold and nine silver medals in the national finals of the "Internet+", "Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Youth", and "Challenge Cup" competitions, securing the top spot among mechanical departments of universities nationwide.

Moreover, the school has established undergraduate exchange/visiting programs and joint training/dual PhD programs with over 60 internationally renowned universities in countries including Germany, the United States, and the United Kingdom. It also provides two enrollment spots for international students pursuing master's and doctoral degrees in China. In 2019, more than 50 percent of undergraduate students had the opportunity to study abroad, and 140 undergraduate students graduated and continued their studies overseas. Additionally, 191 graduate students participated in high-level academic conferences and international exchanges, and the school currently hosts more than 150 international students on campus.

The school is the largest in the university and consistently ranks first in the university's KPI assessment. In 2016, our mechanical engineering discipline was rated as "Asia's top-level" in an international evaluation. In the 2017 evaluation by the Ministry of Education, the school’s mechanical engineering was rated as an A-level discipline (tied for 5th place nationwide), and its power engineering and engineering thermophysics discipline was rated as a B+ level discipline (tied for 9th place nationwide). In 2022, its engineering discipline ranked 39th globally in the ESI rankings and 29th globally in the US News rankings.

The school aims to train specialized talents for the industrial development of the country. It has cultivated numerous talents who have made outstanding contributions in various industrial fields in China. These talents include Academician Su Zhezi, chief designer of artillery; Academician Sun Fengchun, an expert in vehicle electrification; and Academician Xiang Changle, a renowned expert in vehicle transmission.
