School of Mechatronical Engineering

The School of Mechatronical Engineering originated from the second Mechanical Department established in 1954 at Beijing Industrial College. In 2008, it underwent restructuring and became the School of Mechatronical Engineering. Over the past few decades, the school has continuously evolved to meet national strategic needs and international development frontiers. Today, it has become a renowned academic institution that not only has a strong focus on the military industry but also covers a wide range of disciplines and levels. These include mechanics, machinery, chemistry, materials, electronics, information, and control.

The school currently has 326 staff, including 219 full-time teachers. Among them, there are five academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, 29 national-level leading talents, and 27 national-level young talents, and the proportion of high-level talents is 27 percent. The reasonably structured and highly innovative faculty has made profound academic attainments and remarkable contributions. The school has established several national-level teaching and research teams, which have effectively supported the research and talent cultivation of the school.

The school has two primary disciplines - weapon science and technology, and safety science and engineering - and two secondary disciplines - mechanical and electronic engineering, and engineering mechanics. The discipline of weapon science and technology became one of the first national key primary disciplines in 2007 and has consistently ranked first in national discipline assessments. In 2017, it was selected for the national "World-Class Discipline" construction. The discipline of safety science and engineering started enrolling undergraduate majors in safety engineering in 1985. In 2019, it was approved to build a "Postdoctoral Mobile Station", and in 2022, it entered the top five in the Best Chinese Majors Ranking of the Shanghai Ranking brand.

The school offers eight undergraduate majors, all of which are nationally recognized as top programs. Three majors have obtained certification from the China Engineering Education Accreditation Association, with one major even offering an English-taught program. The school is also known for its innovation in teaching, with a national virtual teaching and research office and a research-oriented teaching innovation team supported by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. They have received multiple education and teaching achievement awards at both national and municipal levels.

The school has a strong focus on building a first-class discipline innovation platform. This includes 15 national and provincial platforms, such as the National Key Laboratory of Explosion Science and Technology, and the National Collaborative Innovation Center for Safety and Protection. These platforms have received excellent evaluations, making them exemplary national and provincial key laboratories.

The school is a prestigious institution that aims to meet national strategic needs. It focuses on defense and weapon science and technology disciplines and has successfully undertaken  national major and key projects. With an annual research funding of 500 million yuan, the school has consistently achieved significant results. In the past five years, the school has been honored with four national scientific and technological awards and 24 provincial and ministerial scientific and technological awards. These awards recognize its excellence in areas such as defense, flexible explosion protection, robotics, fireworks and firecrackers, and 3D printing protection materials. Notably, the college actively participated in the research and development of over 30 types of weapons and equipment for the National Day Parade in 2019. Furthermore, the college has made groundbreaking advancements in various areas. It independently developed the world's first humanoid robot capable of falling, rolling, crawling, and jumping, which was selected for the 2017 national exhibition of major achievements. The school has also implemented its original flexible composite explosion protection technology, establishing the Industrialization Base of Flexible Explosion Protection Technology. This school has applied its military explosives safety technology to the fireworks and firecrackers industry, providing valuable support for important national events like the the CPC's 100th anniversary and the Beijing Winter Olympics.

The school is committed to fostering students' innovation and entrepreneurship abilities, as well as comprehensive qualities. In recent years, it has made significant achievements in various academic competitions, as well as in innovation and entrepreneurship competitions. In 2019, they completed the construction of the undergraduate innovation and entrepreneurship practice base and organized the first National University Intelligent Mechatronic System Innovation Design Competition. In 2020, they established an intelligent unmanned systems team. In 2022, the school reached a new high by winning 27 national awards and 24 provincial and ministerial awards in various competitions. They secured the gold medal in the national Internet+ Competition and received the special prize in the 17th "Challenge Cup" National College Students' extracurricular academic and scientific works competition. Furthermore, their students won the 13th China Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award.
