Professor Huang Houbing: A multidisciplinary research 'all-rounder'

Professor Huang Houbing, a faculty member at the Advanced Research Institute for Multidisciplinary Science at the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), is a recipient of the 25th Mao Yisheng Science and Technology Award - Beijing Youth Science and Technology Award.

In the field of phase field simulation and design for ferroelectric materials, which Huang researches, disciplines like materials science, physics, chemistry, mathematics, and computer science intersect.

"The phase field simulation method can describe the phase interfaces and microstructural patterns formed between different materials," said Huang.

After years of exploratory research, Huang has achieved a series of landmark outcomes in the field of phase field simulation for ferroelectric materials. 

Addressing the bottleneck of low electrocaloric entropy change, he has built an electrocrystalline phase field model. By increasing the degree of crystallinity to boost polarization entropy, he has achieved a fourfold increase in entropy change. 

The source code for his developed models has been applied in international commercial software. With domestic experimental teams, he has published five papers in high-level journals such as Nature and Science.

Huang specializes in the study of Materials Science and Engineering. During one literature review, he found the explanation of experimental phenomena unsatisfactory. After careful reflection, he tried building a new computational model and successfully clarified the experimental results through theoretical calculations.

In his continuing studies, he has explored computational simulation methods to explain the underlying mechanisms of phenomena like ferroelectric polarization, providing practical solutions for engineering problems such as energy-efficient use of materials and applications for smart materials.

In his students' eyes, Professor Huang possesses a scientific romanticism. 

Xu Ke, a doctoral student from the Class of 2020, remarked that when facing research challenges, "Professor Huang is my guide on the scientific path, always ready to show me the way forward and lead me up the peaks of scientific discovery."

In classroom teaching, Huang focuses on inspiring students' thinking. In more personal teaching, he uses a variety of methods, including case studies, group discussions, and hands-on activities to stimulate students' interest and enthusiasm, providing them with ample opportunities for practical experience.
