BIT Published Review of Sustainable Recycling Technologies for Lithium-ion Batteries and New Systems: Challenges and Future Prospects on a Chem.Rev

Beijing Institute of Technology, April 12th, 2020:Applications and demands of emerging technologies such as new energy vehicles and large-scale energy storage make more attention to electrode materials, electrolytes and diaphragm needed to develop high-performance secondary batteries, but ignore the importance of resource regeneration and recycling of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and next-generation rechargeable batteries for sustainable industrial development. Because of the dual attributes of environmental hazards and resource value of decommissioned power batteries, battery recycling should be considered when vigorously developing battery systems. However, for the upcoming power battery decommissioning tide, the development of low-cost, high-efficiency, short-process lithium ion battery sustainable recovery technology is still facing severe challenges.

The team of academician Wu Feng of School of Materials Science and Engineering of BIT has done a lot of innovative research work on battery recycling and recycling for many years. Recently, a review paper entitled Sustainable Recycling Technology for Li-Ion Batteries and Beyond:Challenges and Future Prospects was published online in the top international journal Chemical Reviews (Impact Factor 54.301).

Start from the point of view of sustainable development, the author deeply analyzes and evaluates the market competitiveness of decommissioned power batteries from economic, environmental, resource and policy perspectives —— Electric vehicles and traditional fuel vehicles, and studies the internal relationship between the failure mechanism of rechargeable batteries (the failure causes and action mechanism of positive electrode, negative electrode, electrolyte and diaphragm) and battery recovery technology (from traditional pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy and other recovery technologies)(in figure 1). A comprehensive assessment of the battery ladder was made from four perspectives: economic feasibility, environmental impact, technology and safety.

Based on the laws, regulations and policies of mandatory or guiding documents, the battery recovery management models in the United States, Germany, Japan and China are analyzed. The research shows that battery life cycle management is very important for the establishment of waste battery traceability management platform and the formulation of recovery policy. The writer has analysised about the life cycle assessment of rechargeable batteries start from the perspective of strategic resources and economic needs, and proposed three strategies (Redesign、Reuse、Recycle) and 4H principles (High efficiency、High economic return、High environmental benefit、High safety) are proposed(in figure 2), and pointed out the future new challenges and development prospects for the sustainability of rechargeable batteries.
