自从1801年意大利天文学家朱塞普·皮亚齐(Giuseppe Piazzi)发现了首个小行星——Ceres(谷神星),19世纪发现的几百颗小行星几乎都位于火星和木星轨道之间的小行星主带。1898年,天文学家维特发现了第433号小行星Eros(爱神星),它的近日点距离太阳只有1.13 AU,这是首次观测到的主带以内小行星。1932年,比利时天文学家德尔波特(Eugene Delporte)发现了近日点1.09 AU的小行星Amor(阿莫尔)。时隔仅两个月,新发现的第1862号小行星Apollo(阿波罗)近日点为0.65 AU。这个小行星轨道偏心率大,其轨道穿越过地球和金星轨道。后来越来越多这样类似轨道的小行星被发现,它们并不位于火星和木星之间的小行星带,距离地球轨道较近,称为近地小行星。近地小行星定义为其轨道在离太阳1.3 AU范围内,离地球轨道距离小于0.3 AU。近地卫星可根据轨道为4类:阿莫尔型,近日点在1.02 AU和1.3 AU之间;阿波罗型,半长轴大于1.0 AU,近日点小于1.02 AU;阿登型(Aten),半长轴小于1.0 AU,远日点大于1.016 7 AU;地内型(inner Earth objects,也称为apohele asteroids或atira asteroids),远日点小于0.983 AU[1,2],如图 1所示。

近地小行星的轨道距离地球近,尤其是阿波罗型和阿登型小行星的轨道与地球轨道交会,存在与地球碰撞的可能。2013年2月15日俄罗斯车里雅宾斯克(Chelyabinsk)上午9时15分(世界时3时15分)发生了一次陨石雨事件。陨石进入大气层留下大约10 km长的轨迹。据俄罗斯媒体报道,该次事件中有1 500人受伤,1 000多房屋受损[3,4]。1908年6月30日,俄罗斯西伯利亚通古斯地区发生大爆炸,毁灭了大约2 000 km2的西伯利亚森林。科学家们普遍认为通古斯大爆炸是一次小行星碰撞地球事件[5,6,7,8,9]。中国也发生过类似的事件,1976年3月8日15时1分50秒左右,一颗陨石在吉林市上空发生了一次主爆裂,碎片散布在吉林市、永吉县及蛟河市近郊附近方圆500 km2的范围内,这是当时世界上目击到的最大石陨石雨。当时共收集到陨石标本138块,碎块3 000余块,总重2 616 kg。其中最大的一块陨石“吉林1号”陨石重达1 770 kg,冲击地面造成蘑菇云状烟尘,并且击穿冻土层,形成一个6.5 m深,直径2 m的坑,这也是当时世界最重的石陨石[10,11]。2014年11月5日,内蒙古锡林郭勒盟也发生了小规模的小行星撞击地球事件[12]。吉林陨石雨对人们造成的损失不大,而车里雅宾斯克造成了很多人员受伤和房屋受损。如果通古斯大爆炸发生在人口稠密地区,后果难以设想。科学家们分析历史上造成恐龙灭绝等灾难的原因也可能是由于小行星与地球碰撞[13,14]。
现在一般认为,如果小行星轨道与地球轨道的最小距离小于0.05 AU,就是有潜在碰撞风险的小行星[2,15]。为了防御小行星威胁,目前针对近地小行星的观测和防御对策研究越来越多,本文对目前的小行星威胁和防御研究现状进行探讨。
1 近地小行星的观测监视现状要分析近地小行星的威胁和风险,首先要掌握近地小行星的数量和分布,这就需要对近地小行星进行观测监视和编目。国际天文协会授权的小行星中心(MPC)是观测网络的神经中心,其收集、处理和发布所有小行星和彗星的测量数据、轨道信息和新发现信息资料,协调全世界的观测点,对即将到来的碰撞事件提供预警[16]。有46个国家向MPC提供小行星观测资料,但大约95%的数据只来自少数几个组织和团队[13]。NASA的Near-Earth Object Program Office负责近地小行星的有关项目,由JPL负责。欧洲位于意大利的NEODS(Near Earth Objects Dynamic Site,近地天体动态网站)也提供近地小天体的轨道数据和评估撞击威胁等相关信息[17]。
2008年10月6日发现的小行星2008 TC3在与地球马上碰撞的轨道上,国际小行星中心(Minor Planet Center,MPC)等组织立即协调全球开展了19小时的观测。10月7日该小行星进入地球大气层,一个火球出现在北苏丹上空,后来在苏丹东北的努比亚沙漠找到了280块共3.9 kg的碎片。
以前,小行星的观测和监视依靠地面光学望远镜,目前地面光学望远镜仍然是观测监视小行星的最重要手段,但美国在天基观测方面做了很多努力。Near-Earth Object Program Office负责的NEO项目对3个团队的5台地面近地天体望远镜提供资助,MPC的大部分观测报告来自这3个团队[15]。这3个团队是卡特林那巡天系统(Catalina Sky Survey,CSS)[18]、林肯近地小行星研究项目(Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research,LINEAR)[19]和全景巡天望远镜与快速反应系统(Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System,Pan-STARRS)[20]。CSS项目位于美国亚利桑那大学,由口径1.5 m、0.5 m和0.7 m 3个望远镜组成,在2013年发现了超过600颗近地小天体。为了更精确地计算轨道,CSS系统20%的观测时间分配给观测已经发现的近地天体[18]。LINEAR位于新墨西哥州的白沙,由麻省理工学院负责运行,主要观测和发现直径1 km以上的近地小行星[19]。Pan-STARRS项目利用位于夏威夷毛伊岛的Haleakala山上的1.8 m口径大视场望远镜进行观测,由夏威夷大学的天文研究所负责运行,观测近地小行星占用该望远11%的观测时间,2014开始第二步计划再建造一台望远镜[20]。建立于1980年的Spacewatch系统由亚利桑那大学的月球行星实验室负责运管,主要任务就是搜索太阳系的小天体[21],由0.9 m口径和新建的1.8 m口径望远镜组成,是第一个用CCD相机来搜索小行星和彗星进行日常观测的系统。其在1989年第一个用CCD相机发现了近地小行星。前些年,Lowell Observatory Near-Earth-Object Search计划(LONEOS)和NASA和JPL的近地小行星跟踪系统(NEAT)也发现了几百颗近地小行星[22]。ESA用他们在特纳里夫岛(Tenerife)的1 m口径望远镜每月常规观测小行星4~8天,用La Sagra巡天望远镜专门用来寻找新的小行星[23]。中国紫金山天文台位于江苏盱眙的近地天体探测望远镜是中国主要的近地小行星观测设备,口径1.2 m。该望远镜观测数据量进入世界前八名,观测精度居于世界前列[24]。
除了地面光学观测,雷达观测也是重要手段。雷达观测作用距离有限,仅能观测距离0.3 AU内的小行星,且需要提前知道小行星的方位,很难用于发现小行星。但雷达观测精度高,测距精度可达10 m量级,测速精度可达1 mm/s量级,可大幅度提高近地小行星的定轨精度,在较短观测弧段内就能得到近地小行星较精确的轨道。另外,利用雷达观测还可以更好地确定小行星大小、旋转速度、表面硬度等信息[25,26,27,28]。NASA使用位于波多黎各的阿雷伯西射电望远镜和深空测控网的测量设备对小行星进行雷达观测[13]。
天基观测系统可以克服地球大气层和地面背景对光学观测的干扰。此外,红外波段相对于可见光观测有很多优点:例如观测相同目标可使用较小口径望远镜;红外波段观测到天体直径误差50%,而可见光观测可达230%。所以红外波段望远镜是天基观测最好的选择[29]。美国在2009年发射了搭载0.5 m口径望远镜的天基大视场红外巡天探测卫星(NEOWISE),在2009-2011年发现了几百颗近地小行星和彗星[30]。NEOWISE在休眠两年进行降温后,2013年后又重新开始工作。另外,加拿大研制的搭载0.15 m口径望远镜的近地目标监视微卫星(Near-Earth Object Surveillance Satellite,NEOSSat) 2013年2月发射,用来监视近地小行星和空间碎片[31,32]。德国原打算在2012-2013年发射AsteroidFinder卫星来探测小行星,该任务有所推迟[33]。
光学观测主要是靠小行星反射的太阳光,对地球轨道内侧的天体,由于和太阳方向矢量方向接近而反射角度差,所以地球附近光学观测能看到的反射光较少,对地内小行星搜索观测比较困难。而位于日地间拉格朗日点L1处,甚至更靠近太阳到金星轨道的天基望远镜就可以克服这个问题,NASA的多个报告中都提到今后要发射日地间拉格朗日点L1和类似金星轨道的天基近地小天体探测望远镜[2,13]。若这些计划得以实施,新发现的近地小行星数量将会大大增加。未来的观测项目主要有以下设想:1)大口径综合巡天望远镜(LSST),拥有8.4 m口径的反射镜和9.6平方度的视场,极限星等25.1,计划安装在智利;2)4.2 m口径的Discovery Channel Telescope望远镜,视场2.3平方度,极限星等23.8,计划建于亚利桑那的Happy Jack;3)近地天体巡天航天器NEO Survey,搭载 0.5 m口径的红外望远镜,运行在类金星轨道[13]。
随着望远镜的升级,小行星发现数目越来越多。截止2014年1月1日,有10 576颗近地小行星被发现,而2014年一年中就发现了1 478颗。截止到2015年10月24日共发现近地小行星13 166颗,其中直径大于1 km 的875颗,存在碰撞可能的有1 627颗。已发现的近地小行星中,50%左右的是阿波罗型,43%是阿莫尔型,大约7%是阿登型,而地内型小行星目前只发现了23颗[34]。
现在已经发现的近地小行星只是其中部分,美国国会议案要求NASA到2008年,要发现90%以上的直径大于1 km的近地小行星[35],2009年总结,接近原定目标[13];新目标是到2020年,要发现90%以上的直径大于140 m的近地小行星(Brown Jr.计划),但任务很艰巨[13]。文献[36]~文献[38]研究了如何估计近地小行星的总数目。图 2给出了截止2014年8月预估小行星的总数和已发现的数目,图中横坐标中H为小行星的绝对亮度[39]。

平均每天有50~150 t的微小陨石接近地球,绝大多数都在大气层中燃烧掉而成为流星,大一些的天体碰撞地球事件并不多[13]。由于地球有大气层,所以地球上未被风雨和河流侵蚀而保留下来的陨石坑不像月球、水星、火星那么多。目前在地球上发现有170多个撞击坑,由加拿大新布兰斯威克大学(University of New Brunswick)收集、整理、存放最全的撞击坑数据。最大的撞击坑是位于南非的弗里德堡陨石坑,直径达300 km,大约形成在20亿年前。现在普遍认为墨西哥尤卡坦半岛附近的10 km直径的希克苏鲁伯陨石坑形成在6 500万年前,撞击产生的灰尘遍布全球,导致气候变冷而可能造成了恐龙的灭绝[40],开启了地球新的生态时代。
1908年的通古斯大爆炸至今仍吸引研究者去探索研究。最初当地没有发现大的陨石坑,科学家们争论是彗星还是小行星撞击地球。但后来的一些分析和近些年的一些模型指出,这很可能是直径30~50 m的中等大小天体在高速通过地球大气层时发生瓦解,产生空中爆炸,造成大的破坏但并没有形成大的陨石坑[41]。也有科学家仍在当地寻找陨石坑[5,7,8,9],如Gasperini等在2007年8月Terra Nova期刊上的文章称发现一个可能的1908年撞击坑[8]。
2013年2月15日俄罗斯车里雅宾斯克陨石雨更是吸引了很多研究者。Borovička等(2013)分析了雅宾斯克陨石、结构和起源地[42]。而Popova等(2013)研究该天体空爆、危害评估等特性[43]。Brown等(2013)认为该天体质量大约500 t,直径为17~20 m,这样尺寸小行星发生空爆造成的损害要远大于以前的估计[4]。
较大的小行星碰撞地球,会使地球环境和气候发生大的改变而造成全球性的灾难。Toon等(1997)认为,直径为2~3 km的小行星直接撞击地球会造成全球性灾难[44],而Stokes等(2003)在分析了一些不确定性因素后认为,直径为1.5 km的小行星撞击就可能导致全球性的灾难[45]。究竟多大的小行星撞击可导致全球性灾难称为灾难门槛,这还需要进行更多的研究。
全球性灾难门槛之下的小行星直接撞击地面产生的威胁和后果可以通过小行星的动能量级和类似量级核试验以及其他行星和月球表面的陨石坑的形态进行评估,并得到较准确的评估结果。但小行星如果先在大气层爆炸而造成危害程度的评估要困难一些。Stokes等(2003)基于Hills和Goda在1993建模的基础上对石质小行星的危险进行了评估[45,46],认为直径40~150 m 石质小行星在进入地球大气层时爆炸会导致产生地面损害,类似于通古斯大爆炸。因为这样的小行星数目众多,是最有可能撞击地面造成损害的小行星,所以很多研究都聚焦于小行星空爆现象。例如Chyba等(1993)在文献[47]中分析通古斯大爆炸的小行星在10 km 高爆炸,能量大约是10~20百万 t TNT当量,而Boslough和Crawford(2008)在文献[48]中却认为爆炸发生在一个条带上,能量只有3~5百万 t TNT当量。这些研究对分析小行星大小和危害程度的关系至关重要,仍需要进一步研究。
地球表面三分之二的面积是海洋,小行星落入海中的几率要大于落于地面。小行星与海面撞击可能会产生长波海浪形成海啸,而海岸线是人口聚集和财产分布的稠密区,造成的危害也不能低估。目前,由小行星撞击海面而导致发生海啸的研究仍处于早期阶段。Ward(2000)[49]估算了小行星撞击海啸威胁的概率,Chesley和Ward等(2003)根据海床深度、海岸线形状和人口经济分布等因素,用蒙特卡洛方法给出了每个地理单元可能受破坏的上下限[50],在2006年又进一步给出了海啸造成人员和经济损失的定量估计[51]。有关研究还在继续,例如Ezzedine等(2015)[52]建立水面撞击模型,分析小行星撞击产生海浪、海浪传播和海浪与海岸线的相互影响,模拟了发生在马里兰沿海、旧金山湾和墨西哥湾三个场景的小行星海面撞击事件的后果,认为类似雅宾斯克陨石大小的铁质小行星落入海面可能产生几米到十几米高的海啸。
大椭圆轨道上的长周期彗星和小行星由于距离地球很远,即使有少数大偏心率的天体可能会接近地球轨道附近也由于周期很长而碰撞几率很小,在碰撞事件中只有不到1%。但长周期彗星和小行星难于观测,如果可能撞击地球只有很短的预警时间[46]。
在假设目前85%的直径大于1 km近地小行星已经发现和估算的小行星数目,Harris计算了小行星大小与碰撞风险的关系[53],如表 1所示。不过,真正危害风险还需进一步研究。

目前,地面人防工程和躲避等被动方式是防御小规模碰撞事件最有效的重要手段。随着科技的进步,很多科学家开始研究如何主动防御小行星碰撞地球。目前主动防御小行星主要有3种方式:用长期作用力来改变小行星轨道;利用动能撞击改变小行星轨道;核爆炸。
用长期作用力来缓慢改变小行星轨道有很多手段,包括太空拖船、引力拖车、用挖掘机使小行星抛出质量、用强激光照射改变小行星表面蒸发量、用表面喷漆等手段改变光压力等。太空拖船是很容易想到的方法,即用航天器连着小行星将其拖动而改变轨道。离子电推进的小推力发动机效率高,已经在“深空1号”探测器等任务上进行使用。Conway(2004)、Bombardelli(2011,2012)、Sanchez(2009)等都提出用离子推进小推力发动机的方法来改变小行星轨道,并给出了切向长期推力对小行星轨道偏移的分析解[54,55,56,57,58]。Lu(2005)、Schweickart(2006)等提出利用接近小行星的航天器的万有引力来改变小行星轨道的方法,即引力拖车[59,60]。一个10 t的航天器可以分别对直径100 m和1 km的小行星产生7×10-14km/s2和7×10-16km/s2的加速度。后续很多工作都在研究引力拖车。McInnes(2007)、Wie(2008)、Olympio(2010)等研究了引力拖车的动力学和控制[61,62,63],龚胜平等(2009)提出用太阳帆编队的引力拖车来改变小行星轨道的方法[64]。为了增大引力拖车的质量,Marco等(2015)还提出加强引力拖车的技术,即从该小行星上挖取收集物质到引力拖车上,产生更大的引力加速度[65]。把一个类似挖掘机的装置着陆在小行星上对小行星进行挖掘,把挖掘物质抛向太空也可使小行星轨道发生变化,文献[2]、文献[66]~文献[67]等都提到了这个方法。文献[68]~文献[69]等提到用强激光等定向能手段对存在威胁的小行星表面进行烧蚀,使其表面蒸发抛出物质从而改变小行星的轨道。文献[70]中提出建造1~10 km 基线DE-STAR系统,认为其中基线最长的DE-STAR 4完全可以在距离1 AU以上发射强激光,用1 a时间内蒸发完直径500 m小行星。目前建造这么大功率的激光在实现上还有一段距离。文献[71]~文献[74]提出用表面喷漆等手段等改变小行星表面反射系数来改变光压力和Yarkovsky效应热辐射力,利用自然摄动力的变化来改变小行星轨道,但目前小行星不规则的形状和表面限制该方法的实际应用。
用航天器动能撞击的方法改变小行星轨道是目前技术可以达到的,深空撞击任务曾成功使探测器撞击了彗星Tempel 1[75]。文献[76]~文献[80]都探讨了动能撞击方法。小行星的构成特性对碰撞效果有很大影响,对某些材质松散的小行星,有可能碰撞器会从小行星中间穿过而效果不理想。与小行星轨道运动相反逆行轨道可以产生更大的相对碰撞速度[78],而太阳帆是加速碰撞器很好的手段[79,80],文献[81]设计了利用太阳帆得到逆行轨道可使碰撞器产生和小行星100 km/s 以上的相对速度。碰撞的相对速度很大,这就需要在碰撞前进行自主导航来确保二者可以相撞,文献[82]~文献[83]提到了一些自主导航方法。文献[83]设计了一条碰撞轨道,采用光学自主导航方法,用蒙特卡洛方法统计分析碰撞任务实施成功几率,其结果为使用500次采样,其中497次成功,成功率达99.4%。另外如果提前在小行星上放置探测器发出引导信号,可使碰撞的成功率大大增加。
核爆炸本身是成熟的技术,是目前人类能产生最大能量的主要手段。根据能量分析,对预警时间很短或质量很大的小行星威胁,目前只有核爆炸手段可以进行防御[13,84,85]。核爆炸手段可分为相距爆炸、表面爆炸和内部爆炸3种。文献[86]中分析了相距核爆炸的效果,相距爆炸主要是靠爆炸使小行星速度改变,小行星质量损失不大。而表面爆炸和内部爆炸的效果与小行星的结构组成特性紧密相关[85,87],具体效果还需要进一步研究。核武器受国际公约限制,利用核爆炸方式去防御存在发射失败等风险因素很大,一旦发射失败甚至大于小行星的威胁,一般情况尽量不依靠这种手段。美国科学院2010年的报告认为核爆炸的具体防御方法可能还有几十年的路要走[13]。
每种方法都有其优点和缺陷,文献[13]、文献[88] 通过实例模拟比较了多种手段的优缺点,认为对直径大于600 m的小行星,除了核爆炸外的其他单一手段均不能在30年有效改变小行星的轨道来解除威胁。如果对某一小行星碰撞危险,如果尽早采取防御措施,需要小行星速度改变量小,越接近碰撞时间,需要的小行星速度改变了就越大,文献[13]中分析了不同情况下需要速度改变量的大小,对提前几十年的防御,可能需要1 cm/s量级的速度改变量。目前的小行星轨道确定的精度仍然有限[2],轨道误差和光压力、Yarkovsky效应等不能准确计算的力模型误差限制着长期轨道预报精度[89,90,91]。所以通过长期缓慢改变轨道来降低碰撞概率的轨道不确定因素很大,很难提前做出决定。小行星本身的构成成分和结构的不明确性也是影响采用何种方法的重要因素,需要提前派小行星探测器去小行星着陆探测小行星的一些未知因素。
防御任务的成功率也是进行小行星防御需要考虑的,文献[2]根据任务准备时间、发射航天器火箭的可靠性、航天器自身的可靠性、轨道预报可靠性等分析了一次防御任务的成功率,以及要确保一定成功率需要发射几颗航天器。
4 结束语目前,直径1 km以上的小行星基本已经发现,暂时没有发现对地球造成全球性威胁的较大小行星。而直径百米量级的小行星碰撞地球事件按照当前的认识是千年一遇的概率,在日常生活中不必杞人忧天。虽然近地小行星碰撞地球可能是6 500万年前恐龙灭绝这样毁灭性灾难的原因,但现在人们已经有能力去研究如何主动防御小行星碰撞地球。随着科技的发展,未来实施主动防御小行星行动是可以实现的。
