The XII International Symposium on Explosive Production of New Materials: Science, Technology, Business, and Innovations (EPNM-2014) held in Cracow on May 25–31, 2014 was organized by Institute of Structural Macrokinetics and Materials Science (ISMAN, Russia), and Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science (IMIM, Poland). The aim of this symposium is to provide a forum of communication and cooperation for scientists, engineers and production managers in field of shock- and detonation synthesis, explosive welding and hardening, and shock consolidation. 70 oral and 32 poster presentations were conducted in the symposium, attracting 130 attendees from 18 countries, such as China, USA, Russia, Japan etc. Some famous researchers in the domain, such as A.A. Deribas from Russia, N.N. Thadhani from USA and K. Hokamoto from Japan, were also present.

Prof. Pengwan Chen was invited to give an oral presentation titled “EXPLOSION AND SHOCK ASSISTED PRODUCTION OF NEW MATERIALS”. He gave a brief presentation of Beijing Institute and Technology and State Key Laboratory of Explosion Science and Technology and presented some recent results and progress. During the conference, Prof. Chen had a lot conversation with some interested attendees, and discussed the possibility of cooperation in future.

Dr Qiang Zhou also attended the symposium, and gave an oral presentation titled “ALUMINUM ALLOY/MAGNESIUM ALLOY EXPLOSIVE WELDING: NUMERICAL SIMULATION BY SPH METHOD”, introduced the achievement in simulation of explosive welding process with SPH method. The presentation was of concern by other researchers, and in-depth discussion was conducted.
