The department was first founded in 1980, on the basis of Management Science and Engineering Disciplines. In 1982, the department offered the master's degree in Weapon System Engineering. In 1996, it offered the doctoral programs and was approved to establish a center for post-doctoral studies. In 2002, the discipline of Management Science and Engineering was rated as a key discipline in Beijing.
