On the afternoon of December 21st, 2018, the activity “Inculcation of SME(the fifth phase)” was held in room 404, science building, campus Liangxiang. Professor Liucheng Guo gave a fantastic lecture themed “Step into BIT, step towards the world” to more than 100 undergraduates. In the lecture, Professor Guo talked about the experiences of life and study when being abroad.
Liucheng Guo shared his stories about study, innovation, friendship and clubs, showing excitement when recalling the adolescent time. Professor Guo was so humorous that he made the audience burst into laughter frequently. He said “I did not do well in the first semester of university and I got minor award pitifully. Then I began to make friends with those who got major award. Just like the old saying, ‘He that lies down with dogs must rise up with flea’, As a result I got major award, too. After that, many people made friends with me in order to get major award.” Guo reminded students to make study a top priority and explained the importance of finding friends in the same camp.
As for love, he said “About whether to have a romantic relationship, I think it depends. It is pleasant to find a partner who chases the same goal as you do but it is also a fortune to go after your dream on your own.” He sincerely taught the freshmen everything to give help and instructions to them. At last, Professor Guo shared his experiences of studying in Peking university and Imperial College London to encourage undergraduates. He emphasized that people who are learning management and economics are explorers applying advanced scientific technology to real situations and promoters of technology development and innovation. Although Guo majored in computer science, he learned a lot of knowledge about economics which was greatly helpful for his entrepreneurial activities.
“Inculcation of SME” combines the requirements of two activities, “Four good teachers, four leaders” and “Take up the responsibility of rejuvenation in the new era”, aiming at teaching freshmen to plan their future, set up goals and struggle on the way. Meanwhile, the multi-dimensional communications between teachers and students are beneficial to mutual understanding, teaching efficiency and building up the atmosphere of family. In the future, This serial activity will invite more outstanding teachers to participate in it in order to lead students to be patriotic and diligent.
An introduction of the keynote speaker:
Liucheng Guo, graduated from School of computing in Beijing Institution Of Technology in 2005, studied in Imperial College London for a doctorate after getting a master degree in Peking University in 2012. He used to work in Royal Marsden Cancer Center as a researcher. Now he is an entrepreneur, CTO and co-founder of London Contact Company, UK. He used to be the president of student union for graduate students, the executive member of CSSA UK and so on. He published many articles and gained many prizes for his entrepreneurial activities. Guo was assigned as adjunct professor of School of management & economics, BIT on Dec. 20th,2018.
Reflections from the audience:
Yuxin Cui: What impressed me was not only the fantastic contents of the lecture but also the humor of Mr. Guo. He is an outstanding alumnus. Only a few words of him could teach me a lot. He said that he liked to stay in the library and he always spared a whole day to study in the library. This is a new method for me that is worth a try.
Yimeng Geng: It is an honor to attend the lecture themed “Step into BIT, step towards the world” given by professor Guo. He instructed us using his own experience in university as a freshman. He talked about the formation of his romantic relationship, which aroused our thinking. Mr. Guo’s experience in university impressed me a lot---- managing to become the first Chinese president of student union for graduate students, which he never experienced in China. For him, it was both growth and challenge. Because of these challenges, professor Guo has gained those great achievements. It is the same for us. The original confusion and current barriers are foundations of success. All we need to do is hanging on there.
Guanhua Xu: To get us freshmen prepared for our future life, school invited young teachers to tell stories about struggle and I was lucky enough to attend the lecture given by Professor Liucheng Guo. I acknowledged that we need to have a plan for the future with which Professor Guo stepped towards the world from BIT. Mr. Guo’s outstanding achievements are tightly related to diligence. Mr. Guo frequently mentioned him studying in the library and doing research in the lab a lot in the lecture, which greatly impressed me. Apart from that, Professor Guo paid attention to other aspects like student work and physical exercise, which are also included in the qualities of a good university student.
